FAQ’s

Q: I bought UltimateFavesPRO, and downloaded the .APK file to my PC, but windows doesn’t recognize it. Why?

A: APK Stands for ‘Android Package’. You need to download the file and open it directly on your phone.

Forward the e-mail containing the download link to your Gmail account (if it’s not already there), and open in from your phone’s browser. Tap on the downloaded file to start the installation process.

Q: I only see one carousel. Where are the others?

A: To add a new carousel, click on Menu -> Edit Carousels -> Create new carousel

To switch between carousels you can do any of the following:

1. Click on the carousel name to open the ‘switch carousel’ dialog.

2. Long-press anywhere in the upper half of the screen to show the ‘switch carousel’ dialog.

3. Click on Menu -> Switch carousels.

4. Fling up or down on the screen to switch to previous / next carousel respectively. (Make sure that Gestures are enabled in the settings menu).

Q: I’ve created a lot of carousels. What’s the fastest way to access them?

A: You can create home-screen shortcuts to specific carousels. From your home-screen click on Menu -> Add -> Shortcut -> UltimateFavesPRO -> Select the target carousel

Q: Why are there only two carousels in UltimateFaves?

A: Initially, there was one carousel for applications, and one for contacts. but now carousels can contain all supported items (applications / contact cards / phones / sms / e-mails / bookmarks).

Q: So can I get more carousels? Please?

A: You can! You can buy UltimateFavesPRO for only 1.49$

Q: Isn’t that too much?

A: Do you think that getting paid 1.49$ for something you’ve been working on for a few months is too much?

Q: You’re right. So, isn’t that too little?

A: Maybe. I want many people to buy it, download it and enjoy it :)

Q: I think you should make it a widget.

A: You can create home-screen shortcuts to specific carousels. You cannot, however create a carousel widget, this is not technically possible with the current Android SDK.

Q: I have tons of ideas on how to improve UltimateFaves, wanna hear?

A: I’d love to, e-mail me directly, or leave a comment on the blog page

Q: I think UltimateFavesPRO is great! I really want to promote it on my site.

A: Excellent! Join our affiliates program

    Hi

first of all, i love your app, and its one of the best i have seen. since i got my galaxy, i dont stop downloading all kinds of apps, and i’ve been looking for a long to for something like that – quick and beautiful access to favorite contact/apps

I would like to see it as a widget, also, but u already know it:)
i can assure you that if it will be have a widget, i’ll buy the app (or just donate).

    so thanks you!

second, i have a very annoying bug:
afer clicking on a contact from the carousel, SOMETIMES, the contact i clicked on remains as a background to the carousel.
its hard to explain… currently, when im clicking on the widget, the carousel pops up, with transparent background.
sometimes, the background of the carousel is the contact card, with all the details, of the last clicked contact.

    i hope u understood me…
nothing i do fixes it, except a restart of the phone.

besides, there’s another bug (i think)…. u gave the option to close the app after im clicking on an item from the carousel.
what it does – is ignoring the click. maybe its meant for apps carousel, but when im using the contacts carousel – it just ignores the click and nothin happens…

    thanks you very much, again!
    Alon

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Alon,
First of all, thanks for your great feedback!

A lot of people are asking a carousel-widget, but it simply cannot be done with the current Android SDK. The reason is that widgets are not regular applications. A widget is basically a view (a place to draw on to, if you will…), running in a separate process than its owner application (or task) that you can update every once in a while, in a rather limited way, it doesn’t respond to touch events like normal applications (activities) do, and it’s almost impossible to create complex animation (and for that matter, UltimateFaves’ animation is considered complex). That’s why I support widgets for quick-launching carousels. This is quite meaningless in the current application, but in the upcoming Pro version, you will have unlimited number of carousels! which will make this feature super-useful.
The only Android device (to date) that allows complex widgets is the HTC Hero, but that’s because SenseUI replaces the default home screen, and their home screen application has some built in advanced-widgets, which are actually part of the home screen itself.
The reason for all of this is simple: security. Widgets running in the context of the home screen will receive all its permissions (which is practically all permissions), this is a security hazard. I hope some things will change with the upcoming Android 2.0 (Eclair).

About the first bug you mentioned. I understand what you’re saying, but I cannot see how such a thing can happen, Can you e-mail me an exact description of the problem? If you can attach a picture it’d be great.

As for the second bug, you’re right! It IS a bug and I missed it. I can release an update, but I’m trying to avoid it for the following reason: I want to finish the Pro version. The pro version is an entirely new application behind the scenes, it supports OpenGL graphics, it uses Sqlite for storage, and address a few major problems with UltimateFaves (like slow loading). Once it’s out, I will release UltimateFaves 2.0 (free) which will actually be a stripped down version of the pro version, but with all the fixes and goodies of the pro. It’s just a matter of two weeks or so.

      Thanks again for the feedback.

  2. James E says:

Love the App , i have followed this app since the start.
i have just downloaded the pro and i love it.

the only problem i am having is the icons on the carousels are outlines of the icons . you can see the background through them. so its like someone drew the outline of the icon and never colored it in .lol let me know if i can give you anymore info

    • Lior Gonnen says:

I’m glad you like it 🙂

Do the icons look differently than the screen captures here on the blog? If so, send me a screen capture, and let me know what version of Android you’re using.
Note that you can also customize the background, and reduce transparency.
As an experienced user of this application, is there any specific feature you’d like to see?

  3. James E says:

well im not sure how to do a screen capture.lol
i have played with the transparency and seems to make no difference with the icons. its almost like the icons are wholes in the background where you can see to the desktop.

  4. James E says:

oh im using the newest hero rom

  5. Lior Gonnen says:

    James,
The transparency doesn’t affect the icons, only the background.
When the background is transparent, you can see through to your home-screen wallpaper and icons, when the background is opaque, you can see only the carousel.

Of course you can set it to anything in between…

  6. James E says:

i understand. the icons are basically wholes in the back ground.

  7. Lior Gonnen says:

What do you mean by wholes? Look around the screen captures on the blog, or at the demo video in the ‘About’ page. If your screen doesn’t look similar to that, let me know.

  8. James E says:

how do i do a screen capture? it is hard to describe.lol

  9. Steven W says:

I don’t know if you can help but I’m having a problem with Ultimatefaves. I’ve just discovered it and downloaded it but it seem to be too ‘big’ for my Hero. It seems to almost takes the whole phone down while it loads etc.

Any ideas as I’d love to be able to use it?

    • Lior Gonnen says:

UltimateFaves should work perfectly on the Hero. HTC G1, Magic and Hero are basically the same phone, they have the same CPU, and almost the same amount of memory, the Hero has a better camera for instance, the G1 has a keyboard, but other than a few minor hardware differences, what makes them different is the software running on top of that hardware. They may run different versions of Android, and the Hero runs HTC’s SenseUI on top of Android.

Please let me know what are the exact problems you’re experiencing. I personally tested UltimateFaves on G1 and Magic (myTouch 3G), but I saw many comments from users on the market reporting that it works perfect on their Heros and Droids as well.

I’m always using CyanogenMOD’s latest ROM, as far as my research goes, this is one of the fastest and most reliable Android ROMs available for users with root access. I really love the SenseUI, so I had the Hero build installed on my G1 before that, but it was laggy and almost unusable. I know their last firmware upgrade is supposed to resolve most performance issues, but I don’t have any personal experience with it.

Anyway, make sure that you don’t have any apps that eat up your CPU time, or video memory (UltimateFaves uses OpenGL graphics) and see if it helps. Try disabling SenseUI and see if it makes any difference. bottom line is that UltimateFaves should work perfectly on your Hero as it came out of the box.

Send me an e-mail if you still have problems and I’ll see if there’s anything I can do.

  10. James E says:

im using a sense hero rom.

cant seem to get that screen pic but the icons are basicly black. in the shape of the icon but nothing inside the icon but black.

  11. Adam Amzalag says:

Hey guys, i noticed on the vidoe you have when u open up the program, the background remains the standard back ground for your phone. is there a way i can have that working on my droid? i dont like having to choose a color to be the background, it makes the screen look buggy when i open the app. Thanks,

    • Lior Gonnen says:

For best results, use the following settings:
      Background type: gradient.
      Background color: midnight-blue.
Background transparency, try either 10%, 50% or 90% (not 0% or 100%, which some users reported do not work properly on the Droid)

  12. Adam Amzalag says:

Thanks, It works a bit better, but the background never looks like my normal home background. Is there a way to get this in a future update or is that part of the program you cant change? Thanks for the help man 🙂

  13. Lior Gonnen says:

It’s my program, I can change anything 🙂
Basically, if you use 100% transparency, then it should look exactly like your home screen. Since complete transparency doesn’t always work on Droid, I gave you a temp solution. I will definitely fix it in the next updates!

  14. Leo Aguillon says:

Awesome app!! I spent hours looking for something like this I spent too much time in Market and finally found it through the forums. I just wanted to ask if there is a way to pick specific phone numbers. For example I want to make a direct dial carousel for my wife I want three different numbers I only see option for first number listed. Thank you I appreciate the hard work and quick response from earlier e-mail about the unsuccessful download attempt.

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Thanks for your feedback Leo!

Currently, UltimateFaves only take the default number for each contact. I will add this functionality in one of the upcoming updates.
As a temp solution (I know this is not ideal, but the wife case may justify it 😉 ), you can create another contact for your wife, and put the direct-call of both contacts in the carousel.

  15. William says:

    Hi
nice app, runs soo smooth on my new Acer liquid
    only one problem…
The icons appear blue when I run it
is there some compatibility issue with the Acer Liquid or android 1.6?

    • Lior Gonnen says:

You are the first Acer Liquid user I get a feedback from, but there shouldn’t be any compatibility issues.

Are you using any themes on top of the standard Android? If so, try removing any themes. Let me know if you’re still having problems.

      • William says:

        Nop, no themes
just the stock android on the acer liquid
Ive restarted the phone, didnt change anything

  16. shawn says:

    Hi,

I downloaded the free verion of Carousel. I really liked the app so I paid for the full version. It doesn’t seem to have upgraded to the full version on my phone. I still only have access to 2 rings. My phone is a HTC-Eris. Any info will help.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Shawn,
UltimateFaves and UltimateFavesPRO are two separate programs. They even have different icons.
The PRO icon looks like the favicon on the blog (and like my avatar picture). You need to launch UltimateFavesPRO instead of UltimateFaves (You can even uninstall UltimateFaves)

Once you’ve paid, you were sent an e-mail with a download link. Open this link from your phone, it will download a file. Launch this file to start the installation of UltimateFavesPRO, the installation is similar to the one you’re familiar with from the Android market. Once the installation is complete, you will have the PRO version installed, and you can create as many carousels as you want 🙂

You can also create shortcuts to specific carousels on your home screen by clicking (from your home screen) on Menu -> Add -> Shortcuts -> UltimateFavesPRO and selecting the desired carousel.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any further questions.

    HI Lior,

Just downloaded the pro version of the app and am really excited about setting it up with all my favorite contacts 🙂

I ran into what may be a bug – the app doesn’t seem to recognize my contacts in Google Contacts (ie, the ones that are synced via gmail and editable at google.com/contacts). When i open the option of “adding contact phones” i don’t have any options in the following menu to add. Adding “contact cards” is my work-around, but it would be nice to go straight to dialing. let me know if there’s something i might try 🙂

I noticed in your post from a few days ago that the next build will have better contacts handling, so perhaps you’re already working on this.

    Thanks!

Hi, I buyed UltimateFavesPRO today and I have transparecy issue (not 100% tranparent) (I have Droid / Milestone Phone) my question is,when you finally find the solution how can i get the update? i will need to pay again?

    • Lior Gonnen says:

Of course you do not have to pay again.
When an update is available, you will receive an e-mail with “UltimateFavesPRO update” in the subject, with a download link similar to the one you got when you purchased the app. The new update will install over the existing update (exactly the same as with Android market updates).

  20. Cheryl says:

Why isn’t the pro version available on the market? Won;t installing it open my phone to problems?

  21. michael smith says:

    Hey Lior,

Just downloaded this great app for keeping a clean home screen. One suggestion I have is to be able to have a carousel with links to other carousels. Then there would be no reason to have any shortcuts on the home screen, just the main carousel.

    Thanks!
    Mike

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Michael,
I’ve already thought about this idea. Specifically to switch between carousels. I’ll add it once I get the chance to do it. Probably after custom icons.

      Thanks!

  22. Max says:

I won’t post it here, but there is a website which allows you to download the Pro version. I did it just to see if it could be done, but did NOT install it, as that would be cheating you out of the $1.49 which you have worked so hard for…Results of your work are amazing. Reminds me a bit of the SPB software for my former Windows Mobile 6.1 phone (Palm Treo Pro) which I set aside for my Nexus One.

Your Pro software (which I purchased today) runs quite well on my Nexus One. Keep up the wonderful work!

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Max,
Thank you so much for your comment.
I’ve already found several sites that allow illegal downloads of UltimateFavesPRO. I e-mailed some of them requesting them to remove the illegal copy from their servers but to no avail. I guess software piracy is inevitable. If someone is willing to ‘cheat’ for 1.49$ it’s definitely not about the money, it’s a matter of character.

Thanks a lot for your feedback. I’m glad to hear my software is well behaved on your Nexus One 🙂

  23. Max says:

Occasionally goes into “force close” on my Nexus One. At least it says that it must force close, but the icon is still on my home screen and works well when I open it. It appears to be mainly when I am in the Android Market.

  24. Lior Gonnen says:

There’s a known bug that causes the background service to crash when the phone runs low on memory.

As a work-around, you can disable the service by going to Menu -> Settings, and disabling:
    1. Quick access notifications
    2. Enable on startup
    3. Camera quick access

    Then completely restart the application.

  25. Max says:

Lior: Thanks for the quick response. (I still enjoy your amazing software.) All of the settings that you noted already were disabled under “Application settings.” Also, I had set different carousel speeds (etc.), changing them from the default when I first installed your program on my Nexus One. Would that be a possible problem?

As another aside, I have Automatic Task Killer installed. I double checked to make sure that Ultimate Favs was NOT one of the ones checked to be “killed” automatically–it was not.

    Max

  26. Lior Gonnen says:

Setting the carousel speed cannot have such effect.

You’re welcome to send me the log file from you phone so that I can analyze the exact root cause of the problem.

If you don’t know how, e-mail me and I’ll explain.

  27. bruce says:

Hi Lior – Thanks for the great software.

I have a Motorola Droid, and I have two issues. I have the Pro version, and I am unable to make carousels from either Contact Phones or Contact SMS; in each case the response is that no list exists, but of course, I have contacts with phone numbers. My wife also has a motodroid, and it has the same issue. Is this an issue for which there is a fix?

    Thanks in advance

  29. Rich says:

Hi Lior. First off want to say great app! My question is I saw on YouTube that one carousel had 16 icons. Other web sites, raving about your app, says that each carousel has 16 icons. I have only eight. I first downloaded Ultimatefaves and loved it. So i paid for the Pro. I have a Motorola Droid. Is there a setting im missing. Or an upgrade.

  30. Rich says:

Never Mind. I figured it out. just cause it shows eight icons doesnt mean you cant add more. In the add to carousel, clicking on the Applications, section you just check the 16 you want. Thanks anyways

  31. Dale says:

Hi…Great app. Actually, it’s more than just another app; it really improves the user interface greatly and makes the organization and activity selection much more effecient. I tend to load the phone up with lots of apps, so this is great for me. Thanks! I bought the pro version, and it’s definitely worth the upgrade. I’m sure my wife will want to buy it for hers as well when she sees mine fully configured.

I’ve got one problem, however. I can’t add a System setting carousel. When I try, I get the following error: “Creation of new carousel failed: java.lang.NullPointerException”
This also locks up my phone until I hit the back button…this seems to release whatever process is hanging.

I’m in the USA, using a T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Firmware version 1.6. I would really like to use the System settings functionality so I hope you can help resolve this. Please feel free to contact me at the email address I provided.

Thanks again for a great app!

    – Dale

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Dave,
Thanks for your great feedback. Such feedback gives me a great deal of pleasure every time 🙂

The Settings carousel contains a bluetooth toggle item, which is only compatible with Android 2.0+. I’m working on a new update now with many improvements and a lot of new infrastructures to take this app into a whole new level with a series of updates.
I will make the settings carousel compatible with Android 1.6 again in the next update, probably simply by removing the bluetooth toggle.

I don’t usually do this, but I want to share with you some great news before I even post them officially on the blog. The next update will be available on the Android market! Instead of purchasing the app via the blog, users will download the app from the market with limited functionality, and will be able to purchase an activation license from the blog to activate the full functionality. This way, the rest of the updates will be standard market updates, and I will be able to release updates more frequently. Of course all existing users, like yourself, will get that license for free.

  32. Dave says:

Is UltmateFaves compatible with Open Home?

    • Lior Gonnen says:

UltimateFaves is a standard Android application. No reason it shouldn’t be.
      Haven’t tried it personally though.

  33. Towers says:

I’m on the HTC Hero and I love this app.
Now I’ve already read that the pictures won’t come up for the contacts if it’s using Facebook integration that the Sense UI uses.
Is it not possible to do a work around this by allowing the user to edit the picture on the carousel? That way I can make the contact picture for that icon whatever I’d like?

If this was a feature for the pro version I would definitely buy it just for that.
    Cheers.

    • Lior Gonnen says:

I’m working on such functionality for the next version.

In the meanwhile, you can use an app like “SyncMyPix” to sync your facebook pics to your regular contacts.

  34. Jon says:

Just like all of the above, I found this app through the forums and I love it. I haven’t had any problems that a few others are experiencing, but I have a couple of suggestions, if they’re possible.

How about 2 carousels on the same screen (upper/lower)?
    or
What about a scroll/toggle button at the bottom of the screen to quickly switch thru your different carousels?

When I was setting up my carousel I accidentally hit ‘remove all’, several times I’m ashamed to say. Damn these big fingers. How about a confirmation pop-up before it clears everything?

oops, I just discovered a bug. I set my background to fully black and now when I push for the menu it opens only about half of the time. I can still push where a menu item should be and I get the item, but I can’t see the menu items. Is this me or the app?

Once again, I love it! Keep on developing.

  35. Jon says:

    Hey Lior,

I guess I should have read more before I wrote, but I just love it so. I read about the swipe to change to carousels, so forget about the toggle button.

Bug update, I changed my transparency to 10% and that seems to keep the app happy. Any chance at solving this?

    What about the multiple carousels?

    Regards

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Jon,
Thank you for your valuable feedback.

Ok, so you found the swipe functionality. What would be the added value of two carousels on the same screen? (to your opinion).

Of course technically, everything is possible. There’s just a cost/benefit issue, where the cost would be my development time and efforts, and the time to market (or simply put, how soon I can share my latest changes with you and other users).

I assume you read my latest post about the upcoming features, once this release it out (It’s taking a long time, since unfortunately I cannot work on the app full time right now), I will be open for other feature requests (Although I do have some long-term plans like twitter and facebook integration, but it’s too early to even just talk about this…)

I’m aware of the transparency bug issue, and I’m doing my best to keep the app bug-free, and every release will also include bug fixes.

The confirmation for the “Remove all” command is a good idea, I will add it.

Great app! A suggested improvement I would like to see would be more versatile options for items that could be added to a carousel. Shortcuts and activities would be uber useful! Good work.

Hi I was trying to add your application to my phone because I thought it was really cool but it keeps telling me its not available, I have a tmobile mytouch, the original one, can you help me out please?

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Nat,
Although UltimateFavesPRO was actually developed on a myTouch, the current version is available only for Android 2.1 or later devices. Your original myTouch runs Android 1.5 (1.6 if you got an update), so the app won’t appear in your market search.

I would like to create a carousel with individual email boxes. I have an HTC EVO and my e-mail boxes are not an option to add to the carousel. If I can do that, I will probably buy this app.

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi,
      1. Each mail program allows you to create shortcuts to specific labels (Gmail) or mailboxes (Like HTC’s e-mail client). Since you can add any Android shortcut to the carousel, you can definitely create a carousel of mailboxes.
      2. If you decide to purchase the app, note that there are two options: A standard paid app on the market, this is the preferred way, and an in-app purchase using PayPal.

When I create a shortcut, the UFP icon is so big I only see the upper-left portion of it in the space allocated.

Also, I see in the FAQ it mentions carousel widgets. How about attaching widgets to a normal carousel besides app shortcuts?

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Terry,
The responsibility of creating the home-screen shortcuts is of your current home-app. UltimateFavesPRO just asks your home app to create a shortcut with a given name and icon. If the icon is created in the wrong size, it means that the home-app doesn’t handle it properly. Please check this functionality with other home-replacement apps like LauncherPro and ADWLauncher.

Attaching widgets to a carousel might reduce both performance, and the widget functionality, so it’s not really practical unless they are a 1×1 widgets.

    Hi,

I just purchase your app and it is perfect and fills all my needs.

But, in the option: ”settings\user-interface settings\background type”
in the first menu I see in blue written ”gradient, solid-color, wallpaper” but when I clic on this menu I don’t see ”wallpaper” list! that is what I would like to use because with transparent background Icons are mixte with main menu and it is hard for me to see clearly, but if I use the same background as my main menu then I guess everything would disappear around except the caroussel.

Thanks for your help and for that grat app!
    Jean-Francois

    • Lior Gonnen says:

      Hi Jean-Francois,
There’s currently no support for wallpapers as background. You can, however, use the gradient feature, with less transparency, that will give you a very cool effect of still seeing your home-screen underneath, but the icons will not mix. Try the midnight-blue gradient, with 30% transparency.

I did try putting back the old card and it didnt help at all. I didnt change anything else. Just turned the phone on after the card switch and I couldnt do anything else but access the carousell

    • Lior Gonnen says:

It means you have set UltimateFavesPRO as your home screen app.
      Follow these steps:
      1. Add the Settings app to your carousel.
      2. Launch Settings.
      3. Go to Applications -> Manage applications -> UltimateFavesPro.
      4. Click on “Clear defaults”
      5. Press the HOME button on your phone.
      6. You will get a “complete action with…” dialog.
      7. Select your *regular* home app.
      That’s it…
